About

Accomplished film director and entrepreneur, Noah made the leap into art after finishing his recent film, "Scramble". He integrates his unique skillset of photography, silkscreening and appreciation for black and white contrast with rich texture in the art he produces.

Noah started his creative career walking 500 km across Japan to film a documentary on Hiroshige's series "Toukaidou Gojousan-tsugi no uchi" . Art recently became a focus on Noah's bucket list, and "Hunt, Feast, Repeat" is his debut collection.

Artist Statement

My artwork celebrates bodies and movement. I believe the body demonstrates a language of its own - from rage or hunger, to sensuality and sometimes quiet grace. The body is the vessel that carries the human story.

In my work, I photograph bodies in motion, and screen print the image to a surface (wood or canvas). These bodies are coated in some viscous material to bring a statuesque texture to the skin. I am inspired heavily through Japanese Butoh theater, and approach every painting with the idea that the scene I create acts as a window unveiling a full length play at work.

Butoh is a form of dance / theater where the performers are often painted in white and dance against a black, empty stage. The otherworldly performances speak to the transience of humanity, and challenge our perspectives with the taboo, grotesque, or even disturbing visuals. The simplicity of the white painted bodies in black space appealed to my obsession for minimal color and stark contrast. I chose to use screen printing as my core painting process because the street art, retro vibe that comes from turning a photograph into a halftone pattern and burning it into emulsion fit my background and passions.

Through keeping my color palate limited (black and white with the occasional splash of color), it serves as a very simple device to remind a viewer that we are either living or dead, awake or asleep… I wanted the paintings of this collection to serve as inspiration to the transient nature of our existence. That we as humans won’t be alive and kicking forever, so while we are, we should strive to kick things up to the fullest.
